Hello, I'm trying to understand how to create glass, plastic, metal effects (without textures, only yafray settings). Is it possible (at least if not perfect) ?

Which settings must I use ? Because for now, I only have wrong results.

I've tried playing with material properties -> Fresnel parameters : indice of refraction, minimum reflection, reflected, transmited but I don't understand the relationship between these settings and the lights of the scene.

What are the basic settings to get a translucide, glass cube ?

Thank you

I played around with yafray a bit the other day,and it's nothing special,
but this is what I got.

If I had some web space for anything other than pictures I'd post the file so you could have a look at it,but I don't :(
Basically, just play with the reflection,IOR and transmitted settings of the materials.
Transmitted is how much of the light that pass through the mat I guess.

There is much more info in the yafray wiki, but I haven't really had the time to look too closely at it.
Oh,and remember to increase ray depth if you have multiple transparent objects or they will render black.

Wow ! Far better than mine ;-)

For my sphere I don't find a way to make it realistic... Dunno why it's half cutted with this blue big reflection

Settings are
Shininess 0.5
Opacity 0
IOR 1.5
Min reflection 0.35
Reflected max
Transmitted max

I've changed reflected and transmitted values but more or less I get the same results

About yafray wiki : seems the authors of yafray are waiting for the new release to publish documentation. For now, there is not a lot of stuff...

Try using an ambient light with a picture in the background to give the things something to reflect.
I used a HRDI image, but any image should do.

As for my mat,it's nothing very exciting:

The red is the same except for the ior.

If you give your material something to reflect it should look much better.

Thank you for the settings, will try the same tomorow..

in fact, I'm trying to achieve this kind of glass rendering : http://www.yafray.org/sec/10/common/show_img.php?file=blurry.jpeg

No color, not a lot of reflection but we know it's a glass. We would still know it's a glass even without the sphere and the first plane milk bottle (is it a milk bottle ? ;-))

something i was about to post.......but i figured this is a good enough thread.

is it possible, for me to UV a model, and then render it some properties in yafray...

let me give you an example, i figured i'd have a go at moddeling some kind of car, ive made the tryes and what i want to do it UV it to i can put the texture of tyre treads on the rubber.....but then yafray it to give it a rubbery look still with the treads....

You mean like this one F1? It's rendered with yafray from wings (http://www.erlang.org/%7Edgud/wings/F1-yafray1.jpg)?
I did it to test the snap image (and to please my son).

My modelling/rendering skills need some practice though..
