Hey everybody! Its been a while since I fired up Wings and had a go at something. Decided to tune my skills at modeling cars, so I have chosen to model a BMW 3 Series. This time around, Im attempting to model the individual panels of the body and somehow bring them together for the finished model. So far I am about 90% finished with the hood. Im currently trying to get one of the front fenders done, that will be mirrored over to the other side of the car. Here are a few screen shots of what I have with the hood, low res. wire, wire smoothed 1x, and smooth shade.

Comments and Critiques are always more than welcome!
Thanks for looking.

*Note*- I realize the bottom corner of the hood (physically the front right corner) is a bit mis-shaped, this is fixed with another smooth command. Thanks again!

I can't wait to see when it is finished.

One comment about smooth - use sparingly. Once you smooth a model and start working on it, it is hard to go back. I would recommend that you built up all the pieces in a light density mesh while it is still easy to tweak and change and then, when happy with it, save a copy, smooth it all out and tweak some more.

Besides, if you are using renderman and subdivision surfaces, the model will render as smooth even if the base mesh is light.

yes please be wary, subd into high rez is difficult to control, make sure you have your ring select and collapse hotkeys handy, you might end up needing them. I would love it if wings bough out an Unsubdive. But i would prefer other things such as intuitive subD's (proxy mode, love it if you could manipulate it with the isoline).

And yeah renderman is awesome love to try it, no excuse on polys being faceted.

Good luck love to see whats coming.

I have scrapped the thought of building the different parts and im going to build off the hood.
As I was working on the fender I came to realize that it would be just too hard and time consuming (for me at least) to get all the edges/faces/verts to match up with the hood.
I have the hood pretty much finished and I have extruded a small bit down along the Y axis and Im going to try and tweak that into a fender. When the fender gets finished, ill work on the front bumper, then the door etc...

<< get all the edges/faces/verts to match up with the hood. >>

Select hood
Dupe it, (hide original)
Select all the faces around the edge
Extrude Reg Normal
Select faces that used to be the hood (outside and inside)
Dissolve
Bridge

Now got a hole that exactly matches the orig object ...

(Could also have extracted (> 0) the faces from the side of the hood and worked from them)

Heres what I have got for the fender so far. THIS IS BY NO MEANS THE FINISHED FENDER!!!
Three shots of it in low res. mesh, smooth x1, and smooth shade. And yes, I only smoth for the screen shots and then undo the smooth command and save. I extruded the fender off of the hood and tweaked the verts to what you see now. I also added the space for the BMW emblem for rendering. For me, this is easier than the box modeling method.

As stated before, comments and critiques are more than welcome.
Thanks for looking
Seth.

Been worken on the BMW for a while, havent had much time to do much on it, but its comin along. I got the fender 90% done and I have started working on the area for the grill and the head lights. Once that section is done, Im going to work on the front bumper. That should complete the work on the front end. When the main shape is finished, ill go back and tweak it a bit to make it look better (notice the inside rear of the fender is not looking too good). I am really tempted to render what I have so far but I want to get more of the car done before I start working on textures for it. Enjoy.

Well, I couldnt resist. Last night I was having trouble sleeping (insomnia is the worst thing EVER!) so I decided to learn YafRay, which is what Im planning on rendering my BMW in, and try and come up with a good paint color for it. Here is the best of what I got last night. A nice blue color. The taxis and what not in the back are from the HDRI.

Does this look alright to you? What should I do to make it look more realistic in terms of paint on a car.

as always, comments and crits. please.
enjoy
