well this i must say is brillant:thumbsup:

im extreemly excited but its 3am and i need some sleep. i dont knwo what to say im just excited:)

edt: i must go to bed but leonard if you read this can we organise moving some previous threads here to kinda get the ball rolling. off the top of my head furo's H2 hummer has alot of attention it would be great for the forum... and recently i have had a thread title 'realistic edges in 3ds max' that should be renamed somehting like 'filleting edges in rhino' which can be found here: http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=242442

this is going to be great!!!

i'm not sure tilite what you're trying to achieve, i don't want my WIP thread moved anywhere.. i can post e.g. screenshots here in specified rhino forum, but for work in progress projects there's a sufficient place created and i'm satisfied with it.. this section is assigned for problems solving imho.. so if you want to move your thread with specified theme 'filleting' here, that's great idea, i agree.. but WIP threads (including my hummer) should stay where they are.. that's my attitude..

Wahoo! I'm new to 3D modelling but I've done a lot of stuff in Q3Radient. Rhino was the item I picked up first because they had an eval and they seemed like a good product. Now they have a spot on CGTalk for rhino! w00t! Thanks CGTALK!!!

Hi there,

Can all Rhino users, please let other Rhino users on other forums and newsgroups know about this new forum. We have hosted a Rhino forum before and it had to close due to inactivity. We've opened this one up again thanks to the persistence of a few members, but it does need to justify its existence. Unfortunately, at the moment I am so tied up with upcoming events such as the Digital Media Festival and SIGGRAPH that I can't focus my attention on this forum or market it, so I'm relying on you members, who are the ones using this forum and benefitting from it, to please help to spread the word.

Many thanks,

Leonard

leonard is it difficult to set up one of those pictures on the cgtalk homepage that might possibly have the rhino logo and the text "new forum open" or something like that. i dont know if its difficult to organise dont worry but if u can....

How hard would it be to have Bob McNeel make mention of it on the Rhino homepage? Has anyone informed them of this new forum? I wish I'd learned of it sooner....

Sooner? You posted in the first and second thread on the first pages. :D

Hmmm. People from the support newsgroup would be very much welcome here.

i agree with tilite here about posting such a short termed information about new rhinoceros specified forum on the front page, it should be usefull as hell..anyway i'll try to contact mcneel about this news and bring as much rhino users as possible.. i'm sure this forum will not be useless...

well I hope this lasts. I've got a quite a few people that I can send this way. Hopefully it will get them away from the normal stale newsgroup environment that rhino users were using in the past. Of course, not that many of them even used that (probably because it sucked).

probabily, to be more noticiable this forum should be named Rhino3D instead of Rhinoceros.

Teyon

Yeah, I guess that's true. Most folks don't bother saying the full name anymore (Rhinoceros3D).

to be more noticable we need an image on the cgtalk hompage!!! now thats what we need to be more noticable... anyone have the font the cgtalk use... if we make it ourselves im sure they will stick it up... i mean having a rhino forum only helps them!

edt: ok so i just threw this together... added some room at the bottom for text without obscuring the actual rhino... and moved and resized the rhino text logo... so all we need not is the font and to hope that this doesnt clash with any technical legalities with the rhino owners... whomever adds the text do you want to just black out the "NURBS modeling for windows" bit... kinda stupid ot have it there if you cant read it.

I've just put posts up in the Max and C4d forums to get some interest. Seeing as people here tend to use them as renderers.

They used to have a newsgroup on the McNeel server, which was the only way to get support during the original open-beta (the single most amazing beta program I've ever had the pleasure of being involved with)...

Teyon

Well, I know a few folks over at McNeel who may be interested and the Rhino goto guy for 3DWorld magazine owes me at least a lunch, so I think I'll send them all an email to let them know. Maybe we can get a little blurb in the next issue of 3DWorld. Who knows?

Yes, Rhino's always had an awesome beta program. Even today it's cool. They let all users of the previous version beta the new one and then recieve the new version free or at a discount. The Newsgroup is still alive, just goto the support link and choose Rhino Newsgroup (web version). :)

I called for this a long time ago*, nice to see it finally happen. R3D can be very useful, even for CG/FX people. I'll try to contribute some related tutorials. I think we need a thread about R3D's powerful features. R4's UDTs merit a little showcasing over here too.

*My old request (http://www.cgtalk.com/showthread.php?t=15189&page=1&pp=20)

I know people still use the Rhino newsgroup, but many people are put off by it's clunky feel. There are at least 60 people here that use rhino and I only know one of them that has ever used the newsgroups there. Maybe where I work is just an oddity. I checked it out quite a few times as well, and it seemed to be mostly engineers.
The interface here, I think, lends itself more to the more artsy people as well.

I think that people who do not use Rhino will never understandd itīs power and friendly way of working.

After working with a lot of 3d modelling software, i finally got one who thinks the way i do....

Itīs almost a mystic experiance :)

And as i said before on another thread,i remember the time that every thread with the word "rhino" on it was immidiatly (and without the minimal delay) closed by Leigh .....

Well.. now we have our own forum , thino gets itīs fare share, and we should all get a "one tutorial a week" task on ourselves, to bring more users to the bright side of the force!!

Well I use the mcneel NG every single day and I ainīt no friggin engineer :) Nor are most of the frequenters there, mostly interior and design people.
I really donīt like these web based forums compared to the ease of use of newsreaders. But itīs good to see other forums rise as well.
The more users, the more money to put to development-> better tools for us.

I've been following the McNeel Rhino NG for only a year and have benefited greatly from the knowledge and generousity of the contributors there. Many have posted or emailed pages of helpful hints and solutions to problems I or others were having. Is the NG aesthetically and techically "challenged"? Yes it is. And that is universally acknowledged. Does it provide a priceless service to Rhino users? Yes it does.
That said, I am very happy CG Talk has started a forum for Rhino users. I recently got into C4D, and find that forum has been very helpful. I got a tip on HDRI that has saved me countless hours of bumbling.
I particuarly like the potential for this Rhino forum to help those of us that use more than one 3D package. This "cross pollination" of techniques and resources is very exciting.
I hope there is interest enough to maintain this new Rhino forum, and that it will open peoples eyes to fun, ease and power of working with Rhino 3.
Happy modeling to all.

Just wanted to say thanks to the powers that be for setting this up.

My rhino trainings starting to take off now. Just finished the Advance sword tut and got myself one evil looking blade:D

Still trying to get used to the line tools though. I'am just so used to being able to place my curves exactly how I want them. Using the interpoly whatsit curves thing is a bit loose for my liking. Prefer the pen tool in illustrator, just click then drage the handles out. Adjust the handles to get the exact line I want.

Could be missing it but I dont see a tool like this in Rhino 3 eval

jape
06-06-2005, 12:58 PM
there are numerous ways to create splines in rhino, when you press long at the curve button, itīll show the different ones. No handles AFAIK.
Remenber that you can edit the controlpoint with -weight command.
I personally hate the way Illustrator, corel and others draw lines.

erlik
06-06-2005, 04:00 PM
No, there are no handles in Rhino 3, they will come in 4. But you can press F10 and you will get control points for the curve as opposed to edit points. Control points can be moved more like bezier handles.

Personally, I tried the bezier curves in Max and Cinema and it's quite an imprecise way when compared to Rhino. Have you enabled snap, either the grid snap or Object snap?

And if you cannot get the curve you want in one go, you can create several curves and then you can extend them, fillet, chamfer, offset, blend, match, create curves from 2 views... Object snap is pretty valuable then.

Rhino has a similar tool, type command "Sketch" or right+click on the curve icon and you will see the "Sketch" icon there. If your curve ends up with unwanted edges or more control points than you wish there are the commands "Fair" or "Rebuild".

even tho here are no handles in Rhino you can still edit the weight that a particular control point... controls. if you make a curve with several points... turn control points on and type 'weight'... you will understand just what he ment.

teyon with his excellent talent in organics might know how to use it properly with a mesh surface... bu try it out... its actually pretty cool

Good suggestions all!

I expect it's just me being used to a certain tool set and trying to adapt. So far I've avoided temptation to import all my lines from AI.

rhino has handles for the control points, just run the HBar command

although, its easy to mess up cv's this way

yeah, i didn't know about it until i saw a post about it at renderosity a week ago. I personally don't like it, but it may help someone else. Once you get used to how rhino draws curves, you can make the exact curve you need fairly quickly

andrewjohn81

Rhino draws curves just like any other 3d app I've used.

I think they just have the Hbar command for people who are comming from Illustrator or drafting programs that draw that way.

I just tried the command. It is definitely easy to get some messy results if you don't pay attention to where the cv's lay.
