well this is just wierd startign the second thread in a new forum. thankyou so much to everyone that voted for this forum... we now have it! i hope all rhino users are overactive especially in the start to overcome the teething issues.

I must admit i am not an elite rhino modeler but with the assistance of this forum i soon hope to be well on the way.

thankyou specifically to leonard for setting this all up.

Im egar to kick this off but i didnt want to go start a tut thread, a msn thread ,a blah blah thread. to i guess what im asking is post here if your planning on ussing this and possible sugestions you have, or specific input u might be able to assist with.

hope to see all you rhino fans out in the thousands soon:thumbsup:

i'm looking forward for questions about specified problems while using this software, threads with questions about any technique possible to use, e.g. " should i use sweep2rails or surface_from_network option?" and similiar.. including pictures or scenes for download should be great too, that's the way which can increase quality of answer or explanation. i'm enjoying of experiences with any concrete technique, hints from skilled users and advices to begginers. i don't know,if e.g. WIP thread is good choice to start here, but if it'll be exactly specified for any technique and huge help is needed on it, why not? maybe some " free models for download " threads should be fine.. i've got a few for free use. i'm looking forward the most for threads with wireframes of your models, cause that's the best way how to learn anything.. to see detailed wireframe is sometimes more effective than step-by-step tutorial imho.. i don't know, what's next.. i'll mind up any suggestions for "what kind of thread should i start?", i'll let you know.. i'm curious for others' ideas too, so we've got our own specified section, let's use it:thumbsup:

What I suggest is that the forum could be a good place to find out about the information and resources related to Rhino and Nurb modeling in general, as available learning stuff and tutorials, tools, etc…. We can put together the links to those tutorials which we have found on the net. We can talk about what tools we wish to be available in the software we are using. It also can help the developers to get some idea of the real needs of a real user if they want to be competitive in the market.

A technical discussion board would be of most use if the Nurb users are willing to share their knowledge with others.

i'm looking forward the most for threads with wireframes of your models, cause that's the best way how to learn anything.. to see detailed wireframe is sometimes more effective than step-by-step tutorial imho..

I like seeing wireframes too but I'm not to experienced with Rhino so step-by-step works best for me. Control points on curves helps me but I'm not advanced enough yet. :-)

Just my opinion,
Azeiku (newb to Rhino)

I'ld be very interested in any beginners tips.

Working through some tuts using the demo at the moment and this is my first serious attempt to get into 3D.

One thing I am finding tricky is drawing lines. I come from an adobe illustrator background and i'am just too used to that way of drawing. I have been giving up and drawing my lines in AI and importing.

A good section I think would be links to pluggins / add ons for Rhino. I know theres some good ones on the Offical site but just wonderingf if anyone here creates them.

I suggest that we open the forum up for questions and answers. Help for whoever needs it. The people looking for answers on how to do something can come and ask how to do it. If anyone knows how they can help.

I know that renderosity's site has been extremely helpful for me as a new Rhino user and I'm hoping this forum will open me up to new resources for the problems I tend to trip over while getting familar with the software. Then when I get more advanced I'd like to beable to help out.

I'd also like to beable to post my WIPs and get suggestions on how and what I can do to improve them.

Thanks!
Azeiku

In rhino there are quite a handful of curve drawing tools, but the most common I use are:

Polyline - For straight curves (note that surfaces created from this curves have a tendency to become polysurfaces which prevents further point editing of the surface).

Interpolate Points - The standart curve tool for me, if you find it hard to get the shape you want using it then you might wanna consider using the reguler Control Point Curve which might be easier but gives you less control over the curve (with the the interploate points tool you specify points in which the curve must go through).

Arc/Circle Tools - Obviously these are used when you want to create accurate arcs. There are numerous ways to create arcs, I find the Arc: Start, End, Point on arc and the Arc: Start, End, Direction at start good for creating most arcs (they are a pretty similar tools), for the rest of the arcs I use the Arc: Center, Start, Angle or a circle (then split and delete the unwanted parts using points or curves).

Note that whatever curve you make, you can alter it to your liking with the control point curve (something I find myself doing with pretty much every curve I create...). You can also add points on the curve using the InsertKink command/key/button.

Another thing that I find myself doing often is creating curves and splitting & deleting them and then blend them together to get the desired shape.

Hope this helps.

Hi there, I came over from Renderosity to check things out, and already see some names familiar to me. I do mostly warbird modeling and uv mapping. I hope to be witness to some wips by the Masters with appropriate tips. Maybe some day they will deem me worthy of an avatar here.

I like the idea of opening it to questions and WIPs. I know without the help of Renderosity's site I would have been lost in my last model that I did. I like the idea of having a forum here on cgtalk because it'll open it up to more users of Rhino which will be a great resource for me and then when I get better at using Rhino. I can be a great resource for those coming up.

w00t!

when wrote this i was honestly expecting to get up and there be like 1 or maybe 2 posts added to the forum but insteed i get up and there is like 5 or 6 additional threads and the forum hasnt even been open for 12hrs. i think if we still get members joining just for the rhino forum this thing really will take off... all my worries are slowly being put to rest.

It is good to see that CGTalk has started a forum for the Rhino community, there are many of us that can use all of the help that we can get! I have been using it daily for over 2 years and I am still finding out about the tricks of the trade.

Heya gang. It is great that CGTalk has opened this up. I'm pretty psyched. I have some vidoe deomnstrations of my organic modeling workflow in Rhino. I'd be willing to share them when I come back from Denmark (I'm making them for LEGO). I have the second part of one that I can share so you can get a feel for it.

You can get the file from Rapid Share here. (http://rapidshare.de/files/2009763/CM2.rar.html)

How it works:

-Click on the link
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click "free"
- Wait 30 Seconds (there is a little counter, sometimes more than 30 seconds)
- Click on the link
- Wait an hour or two (just kidding but it is slow) and voila.

You'll need Winrar or another program that can open *.rar files to unpack the avi file.

It's a 38Minute AVI. Created in Camtasia but it uses the Microsoft Codec that comes with Media Player so everyone should be able to view it. Sorry, there's no sound at this time.

Familiarity with all tools in a software is essential to get the best results using your creativity.

I found this tutorial is fairly good to let a user get some basic knowledge of what tools are available in Rhino and what they can do.

Modeling a tank by Michael Philbrick. You can find it as well as some other useful tutorials at http://www.3drender.com (http://www.3drender.com/)

As for modeling a car the below tutorial could be inspiring.

Modeling a Lamborghini Miura by Wyatt Turner http://www.3dvault.net/Wyatt/one.html (http://www.3dvault.net/Wyatt/one.html)

Another useful Nurb modeling tutorial is by Michael Thomson on modeling a Subaru. It is basically for Maya users but the techniques and approach could be useful for those who are familiar with other softwares.

Has anyone bothered to contact McNeel? A link from the Rhino site would be a plus... they have a link to Render-o-sh**y after all... :p

They have a bit of a policing problem... Anton Kisiel will tell you all about it if you ask.

Well, it's true we have to make policy on the fly there but that's more of a reaction to the members behaviour than just whim. I don't know why the members there are so volatile compared to here and everywhere else on the net. At least the Rhino Forum at Renderosity is a nice place to visit. It's all about sharing your work and ideas. Still, CGTalk has the cooler interface and industry pros on every corner.

Agreed.

Cgtalk is just better technically (and has more members).
