A mini challenge thread is a thread in which a simple item is chosen and everyone should model it and say how they did it.

This is meant for learning modelling techniques in rhino.
An example for a mini-challenge can be seen here: http://www.renderosity.com/messages.ez?Form.ShowMessage=419552&Form.sess_id=38299842&Form.sess_key=1116966960

I think we should try doing a mini challenge in our forum, what do you think?

Even though I did not participate in the mini challenges because of workload, I still support them and would like to see them here too.

I will participate if I have the time. :-)

Wahoo!

i can't take a look at your example rani cause unfortunatelly i'm not registered renderosity user, but if you mind about mini challenges as they're known, i'm really interested too in it, cause that's the great way to show a lot of different techniques. i'm looking forward for other's reactions... once again rani, nice idea, really:thumbsup:

i think this is a great idea... time is against me on things like this so you may not have my full participation... but i think it is a great idea. the renderosity ones are quite popular and i hope this takes off too!

I'm up for a challenge...

It let people show off their skills and help others to learn.

So when will it start?

Well, to start one we need to choose something to model... any ideas?

I was thinking about a computer mouse maybe, but that might be too complicated for a mini challenge...

well i guess there are two ways to go...

1. simply to replicate a design like measuring cup featured in the link in the first post of this thread.

2. a creative design option. i saw a rederosity challenge with a compass as the choice where you chose the design. people did modern gps things like phones and old sailing compasses.. i think there were even some sun dial things too, and of course traditional compass on a chain that tucks into your breat pocket. i think the only problem with this is people may decide not to enter because it has a additional critera than just replicating a simple design.

i dont know but i think we should build up to the 2nd suggestiong.

Since I don't have Rhino at home it is difficult for me as well to do challenges like these. I would participate, but most of the time I couldn't. I think the smaller challenges would definitely be the way to start out though. Jumping in to something so large is difficult unless there were actual prizes involved. That always attracts outside communities to join.

If I see something simple I imagine I could find some time to join in.

I'm afraid glass will be too simple, after all, it's just a revolved curve, though it might be a good idea to start woth something extremely simple like that.

I was thinking about a screw/nail, but I'm afraid a screw will be too complicated and a nail will be too simple...

I'll start a glass mini challenge thread and we'll see how it goes and if it's too easy/too hard.

Yes please do, i agree start with something simple even if it is too simple. 3Dtotal has stuff like this too, even the simple topics i seen crazy design comming from it. It would be nice if this tread had another tread inside it so poeple can post the WIP of the challenges or just a WIP thread. It would also be nice if one would give the general idea on how they made their finished challenged too right after they posted a picture.

Maybe the admin can make the Offical Tutorial Thread a Sticky also.

I am so glad CGTalk finaly got a Rhino Forum.

Also anyone that doesn't know already the newsgroup new.mcneel.com (rhino, rhino.plug-ins) are also very populated but not only talented professionals but with the Rhino team also.

Thanks,
Chris

I also noticed that threedy.com has speed challenges. Those are a ton of fun to look at. It would be great to have those here. Like every week we have a speed challenge that you only have an hour to do the modelling and then as much time as you'd like for texturing. You also get to enter as many entries as you'd like through out the week.

See examples of threedy's speed challenges here ->
http://www.threedy.com/site/forum/showthread.php?t=29818

I want to participate there but competition is tough there. Like I said, a Rhino specific one would be sweet. Maybe not as much participation but that might not be super bad. The threedy one usually gets hammered and looking though those threads takes FOREVER!

Why not have a mini challenge?

Start off with simple stuff like "Major Appliance" or "Tool Time"...

Work on everone's precision modelling skills...

why not??? i think an appliance is a great idea... i know its easy to to model a toaster when it comes from your own head but its alot harder to create a excact replica from images.

pick and excact model and let ppl find there own images... with maybe only 1 referance image given???
