Thanks,

I'd use the .obj file. You probably need a plugin but you can download it at www.maxplugins.de (http://www.maxplugins.de) :)

for Max 7 you need no plugin.
That is a ton of work. If you want something simpler then check out nPower software's Rhino to Max. It's about 300 bucks, but well worth it.
If it's only for one project then the demo should work fine. You could use that to import it, uninstall, then just install the viewer. That let's you animate and change colors. The only thing you can't do with the viewer really is explode things and such, model, and import.

my choice is obj or 3ds. obj is good. both render faster then Nurbs data and viewport doesnt get heavy as max nurbs makes it :)

i also recomend the dwg file... from autocad. i have mentioned this on a few threads now and no one ahs told me its 'bad'. i was ussing obj file until last week and then i started ussing dwg's... they seem to work better and no problems what so ever yet, they also seem to have he most direct correlation to the original rhino file... check it out... i suggest u try a few tho
well i dont know how it works from max to rhino but vice versa it is brilliant

thanks for the fast replies. I ended up exporting to a 3ds, but I screwed up somewhere and it exploded when it got into Rhino. However, the obj was perfect(figures since it is wavefront). I wasn't too sure about the obj, so I resaved it as a 3ds using Deep Exploration. That is a pretty good asset program/file translator as well. Now i just need to get Deep Exploration to see Rhino files.

i use 3ds a long time now, you just have to think a bit in Max´s way before exporting :-)
in 3ds the objects will always be exported line mashes (every solid on it´s own ..) , so if its really important for you to have an "object oriented scene" and not mashes, just join or boolean the solids into your selected groups before exporting.
what i personally do is Name the objects by selection groups of interest (materials, floors, whatever) and when when you go into rhino just use the name for easy material assignment , or selection grouping or whatever. same thing can be done with layers.
There is also a plugin named mashTOsolid form Floating Point Solutions that will help you transform the mash into editable solid objects in rhino , and it works good for 80% of the projects

PS - i know there are no moderators yet, but the exporting issue to and from rhino should somehow become Sticky thread, because i have a feeling we are going to see this subject over and over again ....
