View Full Version : No joy OBJ exports into XSI or Silo3D??...
WillBellJr 06-20-2005, 11:47 PM Any help appreciated folks...
I've reinstalled my Rhino v2 onto my Laptop, I wanted to try experimenting with some medium density models created in Rhino using the topology brush in Silo to retopologize them into a nice low density, animation friendly polygon flow.
Much to my surprise, exported the selected object (OBJ format) from Rhino v2 into Silo yeilded nothing to be seen??
I tried changing the params (using / windows CR/LFs etc) without any joy...
Then I figured okay, should go in fine with XSI 4 - still nothing to be seen?
So I thought perhaps, version 2 may be lacking in some upgrades so I downloaded the v3 demo and STILL no joy into XSI? or Silo?
What gives with Rhino OBJ exports??
Am I doing anything wrong? I select my object, in this case just some quick lofted shapes, selected and exported as OBJ.
Any suggestions appreciated.

Are you meshing beforehand?
Next, try UVMapper, http://www.uvmapper.com
Run your OBJ through it. It usually fixes OBJ files. The classic ver is free.

I know i've exported quite a few files from Rhino v2 and v3 in OBJ and been able to pull them into bryce succesfully. However that operation has also on many occasions introduced strange manifestations into the file, especially in any instance with many identical objects arrayed in a circle, 75% of them would be fine with one quarter 10x as big and way off from the rest of the model, either the OBJ export from Rhino or the import in Bryce was mis-interpreting certain parts of the data.

I have UVMapper so that's not a problem but I'm surprised I'd have to mesh first? If that's the case I can use any format (LWO, 3DS).
I remember getting a Rhino NURBS object into XSI before (I think) but I forget which format I picked - I thought OBJ supported NURBS?...
Anyway thanks, I'll try that route for now.

This was posted over at XSI Base - http://www.rhinocorner.de/vtm/
It’s a good tutorial on exporting iges files from Rhino and importing them into XSI.

obj does support nurbs, but I think that option was more recent than Rhino v2. That may be the problem.
iges would be a better option for that if it works out ok. It's more of a standard for nurbs anyhow.
but I'm surprised I'd have to mesh first? If that's the case I can use any format (LWO, 3DS).
I learned to do this as a matter of course to control to some degree the density of my meshes and the shape they come out in. I like them to be reasonably sized and reasonably close to the original nurbs.
I've found I have a lot less export problems when I do this. But UVMapper has never failed, that I can remember, to fix a problem OBJ mesh from Rhino.

I 've got a question for anyone concerning obj. exporting. I've got a friend who is working with me on something, and he is a big Bryce fan. USing Bryce 5 to be exact. I'm using Max 7 and I wanted to know is there any exporters for bryce to max? I've never touched Bryce so I really don't know how it works at all if it can even export to obj. I've done some google searching and found not a whole If not, does anyone know any possible work arounds.
thanks

Actually, the NURBS support in OBJ is there in version 2 but you don't want to use that for exporting to poly programs like silo. You should have your settings set to CRLF, Polylines, and Polygon mesh. That should solve it. If not, you should check your normals on the NURBS object before export. I personally would suggest meshing before exporting but either way it shouldn't be an issue as far as getting the objects from Rhino into XSI or Silo. I use all three programs together with no problems.

Bryce can export in 3DS, LWO and I believe, OBJ.

I managed to find this link
http://www.brycetech.com/tutor/bryce/export.html
basically it says I can't export unless the model meets a few criteria. one being that the model NOT be a boolean group. As far as I can tell In bryce, there seems to be no way to turn a boolean group into a solid mesh. As It was explained to me, the prgram doesn't actually preform the boolean until you render. So basically all the things my buddy has done are useless. Yeay!
Thanks for the help any way
