View Full Version : Easy, easy question
XYZRGB 07-03-2005, 01:04 PM I'm using version 1.3..something. ( It's the one with the Animation :Master export option. )
In the manual ( pg. 20 ) it says to select the lower and upper edges on one of the sides of a cube and connect them.
I do this, yet the cube doesn't split down the center. It just connects the points . ( It splits the cube foming two triangles vs. two cubes,.... if that makes more sense .)
What did I do wrong ?
Thanks

<< I'm using version 1.3..something. >>
I've no idea what this is about (as latest wings version is 0.98.31) ... :)
But - if you want to chop a cube in half - with wings
Create cube
Select an edge (any'll do for now)
Press G to get all 4 (G is hot key for select edge rinG)
Press C to connect these edges
Apply Edge | LoopCut - to cut cube in half - discard / hide unwanted half
hth
pp
(alternatively, select whole cube and scale (axis) > 50% ? ... eyeball info readout, top left of screen and hold cntrl to go thro' 10% steps )

Thanks Puzzled Paul. This program looks awesome .
Version 1.3 something (??)... whuuups ..that wasn't even close !
I'm using vesion 0,98.26 ( it has an export to Animation :Master - the only 3D program that I know how to use )
The manual that I have is for version .98.10d. It should still be usable right ?
I just started playing with this program today, so I am a total noob.
What is the last version of Wings that had an export to A:M ?
Where do I get it ?
I tried what you said and still failed.
Open program > right click in the workspace ( is that what it's called ? ) > scroll down to cube > hold down the left click button and drag down the edge of the cube > Hit 'G' as you instructed ( this is with the 'edge' thingee at the top selected ..right ? ) All edges are selected so far ...good. > hit the 'C' key and the cube gets split into several sections that look like triangles .
( It now has a square within a square, but with the center square turned 90 degrees. )
Is this normal or am I doing something wrong ?
I'll continue reading the manual.
Is there a basic ......make that really basic tutorial for Wings ?
I'm just trying to split the cube down the center as illustrated on page 20 figure 'a' of the manual.
Thanks.

Dunno if BT1 at linked page will be any use? - otherwise check various stuff at the Tuts section here and ODF (official Devt Forum)

Vegan, the last version of Wings that had an export to A:M is v0.98.26a
http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/wings/wings-0.98.26a.exe?download
Some useful videotutorials:
http://www.3dpoder.com/foro3dpoder/showthread.php?t=24022
Release Name: 0.98.26b (http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=33028)
Notes:
- Wings now talks French too. Many thanks to Nicolas Bouillard (syndarion).
- When exporting, any virtual mirror will be frozen first (only in the exported scene, not in the Wings scene).
- Corrected a slight problem in the triangulator. (Could cause crashes in the 3DS export and the OpenGL renderer.)
- Floating point numbers in the OBJ export format are now printed with more significant digits (typically, at least 8). (Suggested by HellBorn.)
- The Hash A:M exporter is no longer included in the Wings distribution because it didn't work well (or at all) with the latest release of A:M. (The source code will still be included in the source tar ball in case someone is interested in rescuing it, be warned that this will NOT be a trivial task; automatically converting a polygon/subdivision model to A:M patches is definitely a highly NON-trivial problem.)
- The Text plug-in was updated by Howard Trickey to handle more types of font files, in particular it handles DFONT files on the Mac. (Thanks Howard!)
- If the progress bar was turned off, wings crash dumps would be partially incorrected. (Thanks to PuzzledPaul.)
- "Vector commands" such as Rotate|Free could a crash dump in situations when an error message should be shown. (Problem reported by PuzzledPaul.)
- When trying to bevel an edge and vertices at the same position were encountered, there will now be an error dialog instead of a crash dump. (Problem reported by PuzzledPaul.)
- In the pre-built Wings package for Linux, the inet_gethost program is now included. (Depending on the configuration of the Linux system, it might get run during startup.)
Good luck

Vegan,
If you're ending up with the 'square within a square' (turned 45 degrees) it sounds like you selected all 4 edges of the polygon before choosing 'connect'. To split the face like in the manual you need to make sure you only select the two edges between which you want the new edge to form. The instructions puzzledpaul gave are what you would do to create a new loop, which should have worked to create a new ring of edges around the cube. I'm guessing you had too many edges selected prior to pressing 'G' so that it couldn't properly figure out the edge ring.
To sum up, to split a face.
1) Create the cube.
2) Make sure everything is DEselected (press space)
3) Go to edge mode 'E'
4) Select two edges of the cube (on the same face - preferably opposites for this example)
5) Press 'C' to connect those two edges.
You'll now have a cube where one side is made up of two rectangle polygons instead of a single square. (You'll also have two 5-sided polygons in the shape of a square on either end of the split between the new faces.)
Hope that helps.
