hi all :)

Last year I graduated from a course in BA Animation, specialising in CG. Not wanting to commit myself to a particular field in CG (i.e games or film) but rather keep my options open I felt I needed to stay away from cracked copies such as 3DS MAX, the main program I was taught in In order to create work I could publish over the internet legally.

I have been aware of BLENDER for the last few years and only recently of WINGS, but I felt it necessary to master 3DS MAX first because it is said to be one of the inudtry's main packages. Having explored 3DS MAX my intention now is to learn BLENDER in order to make films and pieces of animation and release them over the internet to show and build up my portfolio, BUT most importantly to express my own artistic integrity.

I wonder how many other people feel that they are more than just the person who conforms to an unfulfilling day job to pay the bills, but rather an artist who needs to express themselves even though we can get very lost along the way?

Considering this train of thought, I have decided to set myself a brief of two months using an early exercise from my course.

Using WINGS I want to create and fully model a simple character then texture and animate with BLENDER to a 10 sec piece of dialogue.

What I am hoping for from this site and this forum is a constructive crit of my ongoing project, honesty appreciated but not too harsh though, but if ya need to be do so. Bear in mind (littlest violin in the world plays) I am a lost artist trying to find my feet again so please be gentle :)

Anyway to whom ever reads this and responds thanks for your time.

I would start out with a 8x6 sphere, rotated 90 along z... VM, begin tweak, cut and connects... ;)

What kind of char do you see yourself wishing to model... ie, insect, dog, bird, human etc?

You graduated from animation so you probably already know this but …
it really does not matter which animation/modelling package you use - it is more what you do with it. That said, many artists prefer to use a certain tools to express themselves. We use wings.

I too have been aware of blender for some time now (the forum used to be blended with the wings forum), but have been too busy trying to learn ZBrush and Maya. But both legally cost money, so I believe that you are going the right path with free open-source software. (Plus educational licensing can be a pain if you ever want to do commercial stuff).

Rest assured, Wings is a very capable modeller. IMHO it kicks the living daylights out of Max and Maya in terms of efficient, intuitive workflow. You won't regret learning it - especially since you can import directly into blender. If you get good at wings your modelling speed will likely increase too.

I look forward to seeing what you come up with in the next month.
As a push in the right direction, here is a head I made in Wings3d and imported into blender a long time ago. I am not sure how relevant it is in terms of learning off of but it has some morphs and skinning.

Also, if you are going for open-source software, check out the gimp - like photoshop but free/open-source:

And there are tons of tutorials on the web - most of which you have probably already seen.

Yeah … I usually don't recommend podcasts but I enjoy listening to this one and it sounds right up your alley. It is called 'Media Artist Secrets' and can be found here.

I apologize in advance if this recommendation is totally out of place.

Happy flying with those Wings.

Thanks for the posotive feed back people

I have decided to use a character design from a character design sheet found on the internet as I see this as purely an eductional project to get me used to working with BLENDER and WINGS.

Looking forward to have some work to show http://cgtalk.com/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif

Sounds interesting, I would like to follow. It's easier for me to spend time with CG during the winter but I have played with wings and blender for a year or so now, still in the basics but learning all the time.
