go under tools and select tweak. right click to exit that mode

imo, wings begins to be really fast, as soon as you set up hotkeys for all moves. for example, i have move free on ctrl+f, whatever the mode is (i mean vert, edge, etc) ; this allow to call the menu only when using magnet or moving along a custom axis.
there's a thread about hotkeys with some examples of setup.

btw, to set an hotkey, higlight the command, press insert key, and press your hotkey. Done.

i use tweak instead of move free, its just for vertices. but a plugin was/is being developed that allows tweak to move verts,edges,faces. I set my tweak to "t". and w00t!

the turn edge plugin uses t and shift + t
you should be able to just delete the plugin
or
you can download an edited version of turnedge
I dont know if any real change has been made to it since version .97.00 but it still seems to work fine
