View Full Version : Ideal companion app for Wings?

Daz3d are producing a Poser type app and the basic application will be free! It will import a variety of formats but probably won't pose initially. This could be an easy to use quality renderer for Wings3d.
The screen shots look great though no renders have been released yet. Look for Daz studio under software development.
With the addition of additional modules it will eventually support bones, animation, dynamic cloth and who knows what else.

With the next RIBBit release, you'll be able to use 3Delight from within Wings. Its feature set is close to PRMan 11 now ...

That just sounds too good to be true mauritius :)
Will it support shader creation,or will that still have to be done seperately?
Oh,and what about uvmapped textures?

Looking forward to the new release more and more.

I'm looking forward to it! I've seen the kind of results possible with 3delight and Aqsis and I doubt Daz Studio will compare. BUT I'm still unsure how easy 3Delight will be to use even with Ribbit.
If I can master it I assure you that's what I'll be using. I think this app is going to be worth keeping an eye on though, especially for beginners. The market they're aiming for will ensure it's easy to get to grips with. I have high hopes for it!

Yeah,I have to say the ogl realtime screenies on the site looked cool.
If it will let you rig and pose that would be even cooler :)
I'll prolly look out for the release, but not sure if it'll be any better for rendering than AOI,blender or anim8or tho...
Time will tell I guess.

I hope to have the Wings 'ubershader' ready for the next RIBBit release. However, until we get a decent dialig for adjusting its 30 parameters from within Wings, you'll have to stick with the admittedly very basic controls in the current Material dialog.

However, this is the next thing I'll concentrate on should the next RIBBit release look as good as it did on the screenshots KayosIII sent me. ;)

Will Ribbit do anyting with vertex colors ?

Please advise.

Really looking forward to the ribbit plugin from you and Kayos, Mauritius.

Did you guys see the comment from hpparvi over on the Wings forum concerning 3delight and Wings:

"It also looks like 3Delight doesn't really like the way Wings exports UV's. It want's them as separated facevarying floats (separated to s and t), when Wings exports them as facevarying st pairs. I'm not entirely sure of this since I well might've missed something."

Just checking.

as far as another companion app, i thought i'd read one of loganarts' posts somewhere that he was planning to use wings with messiah studio? seems like that could be a pretty optimal animation/rendering package...

You're making Ribbit sound very tempting! Seriously, if you really can use 3Delight from within wings and have full control over materials, GI, HDRI, atmosphere and all the rest and a reasonably fast preview I'll be absolutely fantastic!

fig, a soon as they start giving Messiah away that's going to be my set up too! :o)

The next release will mostly bring up RIBBit back in sync with Wings.
I also guess that KayosIII will have added support for "facevertex" which gives smoother interpolation results on sds if you use RenderDotC.

The Materials (aka Shaders) issue has been touched several times in the developers forum. The main issue is a dialog in Wings that lets you set shader parameters.
I wrote a monolithic but versatile shader that reseambles but also goes well beyond what you find in DarkTree. The shader knows several BRDFs and can blend and mix between them (physically nonsense, but useful often).
It also supports multiple texture maps as well as mutiple vertex variables (among them is color, of course), to steer all parameters.
And yes, it does subsurface scattering.

The first step probably will be to add support for setting this shader's parameters from within Wings and save them inside Materials.

An 'uberlight'-based lightsource is also almost finished. The problem is that many of its more useful parameters would require to add some sort of light shape preview to Wings. It can use HDR images btw.

Of course the surface shader returns all stuff as separte output variables, so you can easily render in layers and tweak in e.g. Photoshop until the moon touches the sun.

Adding support for ambient occlusion, irradiance and all this fancy stuff is only a matter of a day, coding-wise I'd say, However, KayosIII and I will have to come up with a decent interface and this is where we spend a lot of the time -- at last this stuff should be useable by non RMan adepts ... ;)

Cheers,

Moritz

P.S.: there also is a RIBBit PDF manual w-i-p waiting on my HD to be updated at last. So far I only had feedback by two people. I send it to anyone interested.

I hope to have a version of ribbit released at the same time as the next version of wings... It requires a small patch to the wings source and the UV workaround for Subdivs is not yet implemented....

The addition of a windowing sysytem in the lastest versions of Wings3d does give the possibility for shader support soonish

right now I'm using wings for car modeling with blender and yafray

www.yafray.org

exporting is slightly cumbersome, but
the results are quite nice for now, and you can do armature (cahracter) animations now... all for free.

Hmm, I've only recently heard of Yafray, looks pretty good! The documentation on the site isn't very helpful though! How easy is it to use? Do you import obj's and create the scene in the app or do you have to convert Wings files? Does it have a GUI? Does it require a lot of study to get a decent render? I'll probably give it a try anyway, just curious!

Just read that the renderer in DazStudio is none other than 3Delight!
