Kralle, since you have only been doing 3D for a day now, my best advice for you would be to rather concentrate on modelling before you start fussing about colours and things :)

Texturing is an entirely seperate bag of tricks, and I really think that you should leave it until you have mastered the modelling side, which could take a long time (it usually does).

Don't try and rush things, you have many years ahead of you still ;)

Select the faces you want to colour, right click for the face tools and select materials, then new, name it, adjust the colour of Diffuse. You can add as many materials as your system can handle and they'll allow you to colour your model in a basic fashion and shouldn't confuse you! I'd agree with Leigh, leave serious texturing untill your fairly happy with modelling.
I'm pretty much a newbie myself but I've discovered that texturing and rendering require a whole lot more study and are VERY complex subjects. Do yourself a favour and just enjoy Wings for now!

Well... it is sort of important to understand how to texture, when to texture, and at what point do you realize hey, this is only low poly... I needs to learn mapping, or... at what point do you say, hey... needs more smoothing for those shaders to look good...

Also, at what point do you smooth out an area, select and export for assembly and texturing... then back into wings, dissolve area and/or undo back to the basic shaped part, and then keep working on the model with many less poly's now bogging things down...

Naw, I would encourage learning how both areas apply to each other as it will help much more with the overall understanding :)

Have fun eh...
