The only way you really are going to know is to jump in there and try it!! I mean I could start spouting off things like edge loop/ring slections, edge loop selection hopping, connect, Tweak, Magnet operations, but that still wouldn't do much but make you more curious as to how cool it is. It's free and less than 5MB (win32) to download.

It will take a little bit of getting used to...just like all new 3d apps...but to ease your trasition you can have the viewport camera act like Maya's if you wish.

Exporting from Wings to Maya has been flawless for me so far. I have heard of reports that exporting a Maya model into Wings has varying success /problems. I haven't experienced that first hand yet.

tsuru is absolutely right
once you know how to do it then you try to find out what you dont know, or if your just curious about a tool how it works or what ever just ask
after you have a way of doing things
then start looking at how others do things, try them find what works for you and what doesnt
right now im trying loganarts method, I can already see some things that might not work for me

If you do sit down with it and think that you hate it, I would suggest actually figuring out how all the tools work and actually use them on if nothing else, tweaking a model you have already begun in another app. Then you can blow off the app if you hate it.

No hate involved when it comes to Wings... :)

This app rocks!!!

The only thing I would love to see incorporated, which btw is easily done through "hotkeys" but, non the less, is how Carrara handles selecting verts/edges/faces, and that is by simply clicking on them... not having to hit a key or icon but simply clicking on said area... so cool and very fast. all things considered, I wish Carrara employed the same methods of procedure along axis as does Wings, then I would be one very happy camper :) but alas, such is not the case and thus two apps are required rather than simply one.

Wings is chaulk full of wonderful methods and once ya get used to it then all others pale in comparison for Low Poly Modeling IMHO :D

but, another app is still required for easy assembly, texturing, lighting, rendering etc...

So, all in all one really needs to identify with the break off point whereby you have done what modeling you can do in Wings and then switcheroony :D

Just my opinion of course :D

Check out "Smart Highlighting" in the prefs...
Sounds like it may be just the kind of selecting you are looking for. Its a big help :)

<< how Carrara handles selecting verts/edges/faces, and that is by simply clicking on them >>

Never used Carrara, so totally ignorant about how it's done in this app.

What exactly is the difference between the two, when smart highlighting has been activated in Wings, please? (assuming space bar's been pressed to clear any selection and you're 'starting afresh')

Whoa, thanks a ton Chris........... whahooooooooooo :D

Smart highlighting is just what I was talking about...

the difference PP is that rather than hitting a hotkey, say e for edge selection ya just hit the edge and it is selected... saves that one move on the keys, ya you still have the spacebar deselect to do, but no mo e/f/v to worry about... and when you consider how many times you actually endup hitting these keys it amounts to tons of less keys hit over the course of a whole model made... :D

rock'n :D

I've had the same experience as wasamonkey. Moving files from maya to wings and back again has been fast, easy and reliable.

For me, the easiest way to pick up wings was to bring in some models I was working on and just go through every single menu command of wings. At the end of it, your model will look like the latest in high tech avant garde art, but along the way, if your experience is like mine, you'll be having moments of oooohhh, ahhhh, mmmmmm.

The more I've used it, the more I've been inclined to start a project in wings and finish in maya. You'll also find you might be in the middle of something in maya and think "damn this would be easier in wings" and with a quick obj export and import, your in wings - problem solved and then obj back out to maya.

And being able to set the camera mode to "Maya" should get you comfortable with it pretty quickly.

I've found the keys intuitive too - if you've had experience with 3d its not too hard to guess E, F, V, B, S, A, etc

Wings would probably start to lag, if you were bringing in huge scene files. But that's not what its for. Wings is a FAST modeller. Give wings some time and it will start giving you a lot more time back.
