View Full Version : numerical pad for strict values
Pickman 01-09-2007, 04:17 PM Heya guys, I'm new to wings3d, i had to rty it out after all this time, I have a few questions though, how do you enter strict numerical values in wings ? like i want to rotate my object 180° in Z o Y ?

Holding Shift and / or Cntrl during mouse drag will constrain actions to specific values eg
For move
Shift ... 1.0 unit
Cntrl ... 0.1 unit
Sh+Cn ... 0.01 unit
ditto with other tools ... try it.
If you want to enter other (precise) Nos ... start dragging then press Tab ... enter relevant No.
- the Tab input facility supports numerical expressions of considerable complexity, btw - so if you want to rotate something 15/4.5 deg say ... then enter that ... 15/4.5 (as an extremely simple ex.) ... and wings'll work out the result and execute the op with that result as soon as you hit ok.
Eyeballing the info readout, top left corner tells you distances moved / angle rotated etc ... and always, but always (:)) read / check the contents of the main info line at bottom of the window ... especially when you start using advanced mode (set via Edit > prefs)
Also - the Absolute Commands will let you do all sorts of stuff that might be of interest - check 'em out. (see R-clk menus for all 4 selection modes)

The man himself, thx for your support puzzled man !
This a great software, having been working with silo for a while i was greatly surprised by your modeling app ( i sometimes have funny viewports issues) other than that, i really have fun with it
Oki, i'll bear that in mind, thx a bunch
oups, i have one more question: what are the correct export/import settings to your own app, for instance i want to export and reimport in your application the same .obj, everytime i do that my object seems to import in but i can't see it anywhere ?
same goes for wings to maya
THX a lot

Correct Import / Export settings will depend on what other app(s) you're using - as I mainly use wings I can't offer much help - but if so, I'd set up reference blocks / datums associated with known dimensions in the other apps - and work around those.
eg say the male in poser is 6 ft tall, and when imported into wings is 1.8 wings units high (say - I have no idea) ... then you'll know that a foot in poser is 0.3 wu in wings.
So anything else you make in wings (for use in poser) will be based on that scale 0.3 wu = 1ft.
Models that import as vvsmall into wings.
Ppl generally scale these up by a known, nice factor say 10x (1000%) mess around, then scale 'em down for export 10%.
(Or similar - as I said I don't do this stuff :) )
To 'find' your mini model that you've just imported - open Tools | Geom Graph, select object by clicking on icon next to name, then press shift A (View | Frame) ... it should then fill the screen.
How come you're messing with wings if you've got Silo, btw? ... most ppl use one or 't'other :)

Well, lol i bet you found one doing both :-) Honestly i like both for different reason, yours got me close to the 3ds use i had before for performing mechanical objects. And secondly, which is a great compliment to you my girlfriend asked me for a 3d app, so i can teach her, so i thought i would start from scratch with her on a new app, and she's having fun with it so far :-)
Honestly, keep up the great work, it deserves a lot of kudos.
I love you virtual mirror by the way, makes quite a lot of sense to people new to 3d

Select faces with 'hole' material
Face menu > Material > LMB
Choose default
This'll reset 'em back :)
